The Art Deco period has seen a lot of spillover into the advertising medium. Many great French illustrators were enticed to the medium mainly because they had to eat! The Art Deco years cover the 1920's to the mid 1930's and saw an emphasis on technology and modernism. Graphic design from the Art Deco movement has always been my favorite and when merged with commercialism, the result is truly unique.

We're starting a new feature called the Vintage Ad of the Week. I'd like to do vintage ad of the day but just don't have the time right now. So weekly it shall be. The only criteria for our selection is the ad stands out from all others. It can be due to the graphic design, the copy, the product, whatever. It can also be positive or negative. The choice for our first selection is one that has always struck me as hilarious. The year is 1950 and the National Association of Ice Industries has decided to promote ice as the best solution to all your picnic needs. The question, "What three-letter word is the hit of every picnic?" At first, I thought ANT. The copy goes on: "Genuine ice fills every cooling need." As opposed to what, fake ice?
